Nhà Nguyễn là triều đại quân chủ cuối cùng của Việt Nam.
Khởi đi từ việc Đoan Quận Công Nguyễn Hoàng vâng lệnh vua Lê vào trấn thủ Thuận Hóa năm Mậu Ngọ (1558) – sau trở thành vị chúa đầu tiên của 9 đời chúa Nguyễn – và chấm dứt vào năm Ất Dậu (1945), khi Hoàng đế Bảo Đại, vua cuối cùng của triều Nguyễn, tuyên bố thoái vị và trao quyền cho chế độ dân chủ mới thành hình, họ Nguyễn đã hiện hữu trong lịch sử Việt Nam 387 năm, dài nhất so với các triều đại quân chủ khác từ trước.
Trong non 4 thế kỷ đó, dù dưới cái nhìn yêu hay ghét, công bình hay đầy định kiến, cũng phải công nhận một sự thật hiển nhiên là, những định chế của triều đại này khi thiết định trong quá trình cai trị quả thật đã có ảnh hưởng sâu xa trong nhiều mặt như lịch sử, chánh trị, luật pháp, văn học, văn hóa, xã hội,… của Việt Nam thời cận và hiện đại, ban đầu mới chỉ trên nửa nước phía nam sông Gianh, nhưng đến đầu thế kỷ XIX thì trùm khắp cả nước, từ Cà Mau tới Nam Quan, khi vua Gia Long thống nhất giang sơn năm 1802.
Trước Nhà Nguyễn đã có các triều đại Ngô, Đinh, Lê, Lý, Trần, Hồ, Hậu Lê, Mạc, Lê – Trịnh và Tây Sơn. Nhưng những triều đại đó đã xa rồi, đã mất hết quyền lực, những định chế của họ đã bị những định chế về sau sửa đổi và thay thế, nên ảnh hưởng đã phai nhạt dần trước ảnh hưởng của nhà Nguyễn.
Vì vậy, việc hiểu rõ chữ nghĩa nhà Nguyễn là điều cần thiết giúp tránh tình huống không hiểu, hiểu sai hoặc ngộ nhận. Từ đó dẫn đến việc nhận định, giải thích, phê phán thiếu chính xác nếu không nói là sai lầm. Hiện tượng này thường xảy ra như thấy được qua các ấn phẩm và truyền thông, không phải ở tầm mức kiến thức phổ thông mà ngay cả trong lãnh vực biên khảo chuyên môn.
Thử lấy một ví dụ: trong các loại ấn tín của triều Nguyễn, có ấn quan phòng. Các dịch giả của Khâm định Đại Nam hội điển sự lệ (Tập IV, tr. 204) trong đề mục Ấn quan phòng, đã chú thích rằng đó là “Một loại ấn có chữ khác cùng chia đôi dùng để so chắp”. Thực sự, tôi không hiểu chú thích này.
Cũng với cái tên ấn quan phòng, dịch giả Nguyễn Sĩ Giác, vị tiến sĩ cuối cùng của nền Nho học Việt Nam, trong dịch phẩm Đại Nam điển lệ, đã chú thích rằng “Quan phòng cũng là một danh từ các dấu. Như nói Tổng đốc quan phòng, Tuần phủ, Bố chánh, Án sát quan phòng là dấu của các quan ấy. Ấn các quan chức còn danh từ khác nữa là: đồ ký, đồ chương. Quan phòng là cái ấn to, ấn triện hay kiềm đều là ấn nhỏ”. (tr. 337)
Chú thích này tuy có rõ hơn, dễ hiểu hơn chú thích của Hội điển IV nhưng vẫn còn mù mờ. Thực sự, nó là gì?
Ấn quan phòng là ấn chức vụ cấp cho người cầm đầu một cơ quan, một đại đơn vị quân đội, có hình chữ nhật, khác với ấn của cơ quan, gọi là ấn triện, là có hình vuông.
Các dịch giả nói trên giải thích mù mờ vì không hiểu rõ nó là cái gì. Cũng liên quan vấn đề ấn triện, trong Điển lệ, dưới đề mục 193 -Ấn ngự bửu (ấn nhà vua), với chú thích số (4), dịch giả giải thích rằng “Ấn bửu là ấn của nhà vua, làm bằng ngọc, có khắc chữ ‘Thụ mạnh [sic] vu thiên, ký thọ vĩnh xương’ nghĩa là ‘Chịu mạnh [sic] ở trời, đã thọ lại được trường thịnh’. Đây là ấn của nhà Nguyễn truyền từ đời Gia Long”. (tr. 335). Đây là một giải thích hoàn toàn sai lầm, do dịch giả không hiểu rõ nhà Nguyễn có bao nhiêu loại ấn và vai trò các loại ấn đó khác nhau như thế nào, lại lẫn lộn giữa ấn truyền quốc của đế chế Trung Hoa với ấn truyền quốc của triều Nguyễn.
Nỗ lực của tác giả trong khi biên soạn TỪ ĐIỂN NHÀ NGUYỄN không ngoài mục đích nhỏ bé là “cái gì của Cesar trả lại cho Cesar”, giúp độc giả có sẵn trong tầm tay những giải thích căn bản, nói có sách mách có chứng, để khỏi rơi vào những tình huống đáng tiếc đã nói.
Dù thận trọng và cố gắng đến đâu chăng nữa trong khi biên soạn, người viết tin chắc rằng vẫn không tránh được những sai lầm và thiếu sót rất có thể có nhưng chưa được phát hiện. Rất mong nhận được sự chỉ giáo của các bậc cao minh bốn phương để tác phẩm được đầy đủ và hoàn thiện hơn.
