Ngoài tiểu luận khái quát về cho tàng Ca dao – Dân ca Nam bộ, là sưu tập Ca dao Nam bộ và Dân ca Nam bộ, được phân bố thành hai phần riêng biệt.
1. Như chúng ta biết kho tàng ca dao là di sản lâu đời được Là tập thành từ nhiều nguồn khác nhau, chủ yếu từ sinh hoạt diễn xướng dân gian, bao gồm lời hát tiếng hò từ lời ca điệu lý trong môi trường lao động, sinh hoạt vui chơi, lễ hộ Ca dao như vậy là bộ phận thuộc nghệ thuật ngôn từ của các hình thức diễn xưởng dân gian mà sau này chúng được bảo lưu trong ký ức cộng đồng và được đọc lại cho các nhà sưu tầm văn học dân gian ghi chép mà không xác định rõ các văn bản ấy gắn với hình thức diễn xướng cụ thể nào.
Thực tế kho tàng ca dao của mỗi cộng đồng là nguồn văn liệu, là vốn liếng cho các thế hệ nghệ nhân ứng tác nên ca từ cho các câu hò điệu hát, bài lý, câu ru trong hoạt động diễn xưởng đơn lẻ hoặc đối đáp tập thể. Khác với việc sưu tầm ca dao, các nhà sưu tầm dân ca đã ghi chép cả ca từ và giai điệu của nó; cộng thêm là những ghi chép tỉ mỉ về tên gọi của các điệu lý, giọng hò, điệu hát cùng những đặc điểm âm nhạc, lề lối, thủ tục diễn xướng. Điều này đã chỉ ra việc những bài ca dao đã được sử dụng làm ca từ như thế nào và chúng đã sống cuộc sống của mình một cách sinh động và mỹ lệ như thế nào trong thực tế.
Tuy nhiên riêng ở đây – bộ “Tổng tập Văn học dân gian Nam bộ“, chúng ta chủ vào văn học nên sưu tập dân ca là tập hợp vào ca từ của các thể loại dân ca, hò, hát, lý, phổ biến ở vùng đất này.
2. Ca dao – Dân ca là sản phẩm ít nhiều mang tính đặc thù của các cộng đồng. Do đó, chúng ta chỉ có thể thấu hiểu, có thể thưởng thức trọn vẹn được khi đặt chúng trong bối cảnh địa lý – tự nhiên, trong tọa độ lịch sử – văn xã của chúng. Chính vì lý do này, ở phần sưu tập, chúng tôi sắp xếp chúng theo từng địa phương mà các nhà sưu tầm và nghiên cứu đã dày công biên soạn trong các ấn phẩm đã xuất bản. Theo đó chúng tôi cố giữ nguyên hệ thống phân loại theo chủ đề nội dung của các tác giả, tuyệt đối tránh sự xáo trộn không cần thiết.
