Để phân biệt với tờ Liên Hoa ra trước đó vài năm ở Đà Lạt do Huỳnh Văn Trọng-Thích Nhất Hạnh chủ trương, chúng tôi gọi tờ Liên Hoa ra ở Huế là Liên Hoa Huế.
Tháng Giêng năm Ất Mùi (1955) Liên Hoa Văn Tập ra số đầu tiên do sư bà Diệu Không làm chủ nhiệm, cô Hoàng Thị Kim Cúc làm thủ quỹ, báo quán đặt tại chùa Diệu Đế, số 25 đường Trung Bộ-Huế, do Liên Hoa Tùng Thư xuất bản. Cuối năm đó sư bà Diệu Không nhường báo quán lại cho Tổng Trị sự Giáo hội Tăng già Trung Việt (biên bản họp có ghi trên số 11&12, năm 1955). Báo ra đều đặn mỗi tháng một kỳ, thỉnh thoảng ra số đôi vào các dịp Lễ Phật đản, Xuân hay “số năm” vào sau ngày Pháp nạn trong suốt 12 năm. Năm Bính Ngọ thứ 12 (1966) báo chỉ thấy ra đến số thứ 4&5, không biết có phải là số cuối không? Nếu là số cuối thì tổng cộng báo ra được 137 số với 7.402 trang. Báo có khổ 15.5x23cm, có lúc 15.5x24cm. Số trang bốn năm đầu là 40, năm thứ năm 50, từ năm thứ sáu về sau số trang dao động từ 60-70, các số đôi thường có số trang gấp đôi số thường.
Bìa báo được họa sĩ Phạm Đăng Trí trình bày (từ năm thứ 2 trở đi), thay đổi theo năm, mỗi năm có mẫu khác, các số trong năm chỉ thay đổi tông màu. Những số đặc biệt kỷ niệm Phật đản, Thành đạo-Xuân, Đại hội… bìa được thiết kế riêng. Như số 5-10 ra vào tháng 10-1963, vừa trải qua Pháp nạn, hình bìa được trình bày ảnh bồ tát Quảng Đức phía sau và quả tim bất diệt cách điệu phía trước được đôi bồ câu gắp mang bay đi trên một dải lụa trắng, thật là một ý tưởng hay.
Về tên báo, ba năm đầu (1955-1957) báo có tên là Liên Hoa Văn Tập, từ năm thứ tư trở đi đổi thành Liên Hoa Nguyệt San. Không hẳn vì báo ra hằng tháng, mà có lẽ thể hiện nguyện vọng đưa Liên Hoa ngày càng trở thành tờ báo chuyên nghiệp hơn của những người chủ trương nó.
Liên Hoa chỉ ghi năm Âm lịch, không ghi năm dương lịch, bắt đầu từ năm Ất Mùi (1955) và kết thúc năm Bính Ngọ (1966). Báo ra theo tháng Âm lịch, về sau ra vào đúng ngày Rằm mỗi tháng. Đầu năm thứ 2, khi báo được sư bà Diệu Không nhường lại cho Giáo hội Tăng già Trung Việt thì trên bìa báo có đề chữ “Bộ mới”, đến năm thứ 3 thì không còn ghi “Bộ mới” nữa.
Về nhân sự, từ năm thứ hai trở đi báo do HT. Đôn Hậu làm chủ nhiệm, Thích Đức Tâm tổng thư ký và thủ quỹ là sư bà Diệu không. Bộ ba này hoạt động đến hết chiều dài của báo.
Tòa soạn bốn năm đầu đặt tại chùa Diệu Đế, số 25 đường Trung Bộ-Huế, Huế; từ năm thứ 5 về sau dời về 66, đường Chi Lăng, hộp thư 24-Huế (không biết là hai hay một địa điểm nhưng thay đổi địa chỉ?.
Báo lần lượt là cơ quan hoằng pháp của Phật học tùng thư năm đầu tiên, Giáo hội Tăng già Trung phần từ năm thứ 2 đến thứ 5, Giáo hội Tăng già toàn quốc từ năm thứ 6 đến thứ 8, năm thứ 9 là của Giáo hội Tăng già Việt Nam. Từ năm thứ 10 (1964) về sau báo không ghi thuộc cơ quan nào nữa, có lẽ vì lúc này Giáo hội PGVN Thống nhất đã ra đời, báo tuy đường hướng vẫn như cũ, nhưng “phân vân” không biết ghi thế nào cho phải nên bỏ luôn?!
Về nội dung, Liên Hoa chủ trương “đưa người từ đời vào đạo lại đưa đạo tham hiệp cùng đời; làm giây liên lạc giữa đời và đạo”, giảng giải pháp Phật từ thấp đến cao, giải đáp thắc mắc đời thường của cư sĩ Phật tử. Chính vì vậy, mặc dù có những cây bút như: Thích Mãn Giác, Thích Minh Châu, Thích Trí Quang, Nguyễn Đăng Thục, sư cô Dạ Quang, Quách Tấn Phát, Nguyễn Thái, Võ Đình Cường… song các bài viết không đi sâu nghiên cứu Phật học, triết học mà chỉ đi vào đời sống bằng những bài viết nhỏ, thiết thực theo nhu cầu của bạn đọc. Ngoài ra báo còn có những mục thông tin thời sự trong nước và thế giới được cập nhật thường xuyên, mục giải đáp Phật học, các biên bản hội nghị của giáo hội, các sự kiện vừa mới xảy ra, những bài phỏng vấn. Trong những tờ nguyệt san của Phật giáo (không kể tuần báo) đã xuất bản từ trước đến thời điểm này có lẽ Liên Hoa Huế là tờ mang tính chất báo chí hơn cả.
Tháng 10 (30-11-1963) ra số tái ngộ 112 trang và xem như là “số lục” (5-10) tập hợp 6 số trên một quyển. Đây là số báo rất quý, ghi lại những kỷ niệm, những chặng đường vừa qua của công cuộc tranh đấu Phật giáo, phỏng vấn nhiều tướng lĩnh và cao tăng, có bài đề nghị nên có một Viện đại học Phật giáo.
Kỳ ấn hành này, TVHQ in Liên Hoa 12 năm thành 12 tập. Tập thứ 9 (năm 1963) chúng tôi còn thiếu ba số: 1, 3 và 4. Đây là những tháng khó khăn của Phật giáo do Pháp nạn nên rất khó tìm. Năm cuối 1966, chúng tôi chỉ sưu tầm được đến số 4&5, không biết báo đã kết thúc chưa, không tìm thấy thông tin gì về việc đình bản, tạm thời đóng thành tập mỏng 5 số. Nếu còn, sau này có điều kiện sưu tầm sẽ in ấn thay thế.
Ngoài ra, có vài số chúng tôi xử lý file từ bản photo do chưa sưu tầm được bản gốc, nên chữ không được sắc nét bằng các số có bản gốc: 1967: 12; 1962: 2, 7, 8; 1963: 1, 2, 4; 1964: 5, 12; 1965: 11, 1966: 4&5. Tổng cộng phải số hóa trên 10 số photo. Tất cả các số photo này đều do anh Mừng ở Huế cung cấp. Nhân đây chúng tôi xin chân thành tri ân anh rất nhiều.
Ngoài ra để có bản Liên Hoa khá sạch đẹp này là nhờ sự gìn giữ cẩn thận và hiến tặng của HT. Thích Minh Thanh chùa Bửu Sơn, Xóm Vôi, Sài Gòn; Thầy Ngọc, Sa Đéc, Đồng Tháp.

1. Bổ sung được các số thiếu 1, 3, 4 của năm 1963. Liên Hoa xem như đủ bộ: Xem như là bởi năm cuối 1966, số 4&5 chưa biết chắc chắn có phải là số cuối không. Các nguồn thư viện được biết cũng chỉ có tới số 4&5 này.
2. Thay một vài số được xử lý trên văn bản photo bằng các số được xử lý trên văn bản gốc.
3. File được tuốt kỹ thêm, bìa thiết kế mới ép nhũ, ruột in giấy tốt.
