Tạp chí Viên Âm thuộc An Nam Phật Học hội (sau 1945 là Hội Việt Nam Phật Học)
An Nam Phật Học hội được thành lập năm 1932, cũng như các hội Phật học khác[1] đều có các hoạt động trọng tâm gồm xuất bản báo chí, mở trường dạy học đào tạo tăng tài, dịch kinh điển – ấn loát và hoằng pháp. Tuy vậy, An Nam Phật Học hội trong cái chung cũng có những sắc thái riêng:
- Về cơ quan phát ngôn. Khác với Từ Bi Âm của Hội Nam Kỳ Nghiên Cứu Phật Học, Duy Tâm của Lưỡng Xuyên Phật Học, Đuốc Tuệ của Hội Phật Giáo Bắc Kỳ chỉ tồn tại đến năm 1945, tờ báo của Hội là Viên Âm trải qua hai giai đoạn: 1933-1945 ra đến số 78; đình bản rồi tục bản 1949-1953 ra từ số 79-129 (51 số).
- Về đào tạo. Lịch sử đào tạo của Hội có sự kế thừa từ lúc tiền chấn hưng trước những năm 1930 khi hòa thượng Giác Tiên cùng với các ngài Phước Huệ… đã đào tạo ra một thế hệ tài năng để gây dựng phong trào chấn hưng như các ngài Mật Nguyện, Mật Khế, Mật Thể, Trí Độ, Tâm Minh-Lê Đình Thám… Chính thế hệ này đã đào tạo tiếp một thế hệ tăng tài trở thành xương sống của Phật giáo Việt Nam thế kỷ 20 như các ngài Trí Quang, Trí Nghiêm, Trí Thủ, Trí Tịnh, Thiện Hoa, Thiện Hòa, Thiện Minh, Thiện Siêu, Minh Châu, cư sĩ Võ Đình Cường… Do vậy, tuy xét về mặt lan tỏa phong trào chấn hưng đi từ Nam ra Bắc nhưng về mặt đào tạo thì từ Trung đi vào Nam. Các trường Phật Quang, Liên Hải, Ứng Hòa với sự lãnh đạo của hòa thượng Trí Tịnh, Thiện Hoa, Thiện Hòa… được xem là con đẻ của Phật học đường Tây Thiên, Báo Quốc. Về chương trình giáo dục, ANPHH cũng có sự quy hoạch rõ ràng, bài bản hơn các hội khác. Về quy mô thì rộng mở không chỉ có tu sĩ mà còn dành cho các cư sĩ tại gia. Hội còn mở các lớp đồng ấu, đoàn thanh niên Phật học đức dục, gia đình Phật hóa phổ-tiền thân của Gia đình Phật tử Việt Nam được thành lập vào năm 1951.
- Về tổ chức. Hội có các khuông hội tịnh độ xuống đến cấp huyện, cấp xã và được xem như một chi nhánh hoằng pháp của Hội. Số hội viên được ghi nhận lên đến hàng triệu. Hội cũng vận động xây dựng một cơ sở quy mô cho các tỉnh hội và tổng hội. Giữa tổng hội và các chi hội, khuông hội có một sự gắn kết mật thiết giúp đỡ lẫn nhau về mọi mặt. Báo Viên Âm được gởi đến từng khuông hội. Các hội viên mua báo được giảm phần trăm so với người ngoài hội. Cuộc vận động gây dựng Phật học viện Kim Sơn quy mô lớn trên Viên Âm để làm nơi quy tụ mọi lớp Phật học vừa đến lúc hình thành thì biến cố 1945 xảy ra làm kế hoạch bị vỡ lở.
- Về hoằng pháp. Nếu như các hội Phật học khác đến sau 1950 mới tạo ra một đội ngũ hoằng pháp là các giảng sư thì ANPHH từ những năm 1935 đã cử các học tăng trưởng thành từ hội luân phiên về giảng dạy ở các khuông hội với những nội dung Phật pháp được ban trị sự thẩm định.
Nhìn chung ANPHH hoạt động sôi nổi và bài bản, chặt chẽ hơn các Hội khác trong nước. Chính điều đó đã tạo lập một nền tảng và sự ảnh hưởng dài lâu đối với Phật giáo Việt Nam hơn các hội Phật học khác. Để có được điều đó phải hội nhiều yếu tố.
VAI TRÒ CỦA CƯ SĨ TÂM MINH LÊ ĐÌNH THÁM
Bộ não của bộ máy ấy phải kể đến cư sĩ Tâm Minh-Lê Đình Thám. Theo Việt Nam Phật giáo sử luận của Nguyễn Lang: “Đệ tử tại gia xuất sắc nhất của Giác Tiên hẳn là Tâm Minh Lê Đình Thám. Bác sĩ Lê Đình Thám là một người có tư chất cực kỳ thông minh và trái tim đầy nhiệt tình. Ông sinh năm 1897 tại Quảng Nam, con của thượng thư bộ binh Lê Đỉnh triều Tự Đức. Từ hồi nhỏ ông đã được học Nho và đã làm được bài văn cùng thi phú cổ điển. Lớn lên ông theo tân học, đậu thủ khoa trong tất cả các kỳ thi từ cấp tiểu học đến đại học. Ông tốt nghiệp thủ khoa Đông Dương Y Sĩ khóa 1916, và Y Khoa Bác Sĩ khóa 1930”. Khi ANPHH được thành lập ông giữ chức vụ hội trưởng, thời gian sau đó đến các vị Nguyễn Khoa Tân, Ưng Bàng, Nguyễn Đình Hòe, Lê Văn Định… Ông giữ vị trí chủ nhiệm kiêm chủ bút Viên Âm từ lúc thành lập đến năm 1945 (78 số). “Lê Đình Thám không những làm cái trục trung ương của hội mà còn là linh hồn của tạp chí Viên Âm nữa”. Ông có bộ óc tổ chức và một sức làm việc bền bỉ phi thường. Ổng viết bài với nhiều bút hiệu, có khi trong một số báo có tới mấy bài là của ông: Tâm Minh, Tâm Trực, Tâm Lực, T.M (truyện ngắn), Châu Hải (truyện dài), Ba Rảm (truyện hài hước).
