Mục đích của luận văn này là cho thấy: thứ nhất, vấn đề xã hội là mối quan tâm căn bản của nhiều triết gia vĩ đại; thứ nhì, cách tiếp cận vấn đề xã hội thông qua triết học là điều kiện đầu tiên cho một cách xử lý thành công vấn đề này dù chỉ ở mức độ khiêm tốn; và thứ ba, một hướng tiếp cận triết học thông qua vấn đề xã hội thì rất cần thiết cho sự phục sinh của triết học.
Thuật ngữ “triết học” ở đây chúng ta nên hiểu đó là một nghiên cứu về kinh nghiệm nói chung, hoặc về một bộ phận kinh nghiệm trong mối tương quan với tổng thể.
Với “vấn đề xã hội” chúng ta nên hiểu, một cách đơn giản và rộng rãi, như vấn đề giảm thiểu bất hạnh của con người bằng cách điều chỉnh những định chế xã hội. Nó là một vấn đề vốn, từng tự nó tái định hình, luôn thoát khỏi sự định nghĩa sắc bén hơn; bởi vì bất hạnh có liên quan đến khát vọng, và khát vọng thì mang tính cá nhân và không ngừng thay đổi: Mỗi chúng ta nhìn vấn đề này một cách không ổn định xét theo nguyện vọng thường thay đổi của mỗi người. Dĩ nhiên, nó là vấn đề phức tạp một cách khó chịu, và chúng ta phải nhớ rằng giới hạn cho ý định của chúng ta ở đây là xem triết học như một cách tiếp cận vấn đề này, và xem bản thân vấn đề như một cách tiếp cận triết học.
Chúng tôi không đề xuất giải pháp nào cả. Chúng ta hãy, như một chừng mực định hướng tốt đẹp, chạm tới một số đỉnh cao trong lịch sử triết học, đồng thời có quan tâm đến lợi ích xã hội vốn ẩn trong mọi mê cung siêu hình học.
