Long Thọ được tôn xưng là Đức Phật thứ hai, được tôn lập là tổ tám đại tông môn, xuống Long Cung mang kinh điển Đại Thừa về, thì có thể chỉ là sự kính ngưỡng và huyền thoại của tín đồ, nhưng Long Thọ là người đặt cơ sở tư tưởng cho Phật giáo Đại thừa là một sự thật lịch sử. Từ Ấn Độ tư tưởng Long Thọ trở nên lập cước chung của tất cả các tông môn Phật giáo phát triển sau đó. Ở Tây phương, từ thế kỷ trước Thiền tông và sau đó là Kim cương thừa cùng song hành phát triển cũng đã giúp phần làm tươi trẻ lại suối nguồn giáo lý Tính Không và cũng là nơi trong nhiều thế kỷ phần hình thức danh tướng từ lâu đã che mờ phần tinh túy của giáo lý Trí tuệ Giải thoát.

Quả thật trong một thời gian dài, không ít tu sĩ và quần chúng giáo đồ đã tập trung quá nhiều tâm huyết cho những nghi quỹ (như ở Ấn Độ và Tây Tạng) hay danh tướng (như ở Trung Hoa). Cho nên nếu Phật giáo chỉ còn là sinh hoạt hình tướng thì tất nhiên phần tư tưởng tinh túy giải thoát cũng thường dễ bị khuất lấp sau không khí hương khói dung tục. Trước đó ở Ấn Độ, nơi xuất phát của Phật giáo, hơn sáu trăm năm sau khi Đức Phật nhập diệt thì cũng không khác. Phật Pháp đã bị phân hóa thành mười tám bộ phái và sống trong bóng mờ hào quang thời vua A Dục. Giữa thời đại mà ý thức hệ và tôn giáo Bà La Môn đang phát triển, Phật giáo khi đó vẫn còn nhiều chùa thất, nhiều tín đồ và cũng có nhiều tu sĩ hành đạo nhưng ít người giác ngộ.

Ngài Long Thọ xuất hiện. Không dựng lập thêm một tông môn mới cũng không ấn khả truyền thừa, ngài chỉ phá tà hiển chánh, trùng tuyên chính pháp của Đức Phật đang bị các tư tưởng thần giáo xâm nhập trong tình trạng các bộ phái Phật giáo tiếp tục phân hóa và truyền bá nhiều giáo điều hình tướng lẫn huyền bí (vay mượn từ những tôn giáo khác và truyền thống địa phương) để vừa răn đe vừa để phù hợp với các nhu cầu dung tục của quần chúng trong một thời đại xã hội đang có các biến chuyển lớn. Long Thọ xuất hiện không những đã thành công trong việc trùng tuyên chính pháp mà còn xây dựng cơ sở nền tảng cho Phật giáo Đại thừa tiếp tục phát triển.

Hiện nay giới trí thức ưu tú của thế giới đang tu học kinh luân Long Thọ không phải chỉ nghiên cứu tư tưởng giáo pháp, mà còn với viễn kiến tìm đến một trí tuệ giải thoát trong một thực tại thế giới đang đối diện trước sự phá sản tri thức lẫn thiên nhiên đang đe dọa nhân loại. Là một quốc gia có truyền thống Phật giáo lâu đời, người Việt Nam càng có thêm lý do để tu học kinh luận mà Long Thọ đã giao truyền để xiển dương lại chính pháp trong thời đại của mình. Long Thọ viết nhiều luận, nhưng tinh yếu tư tưởng giáo pháp của ngài kết tinh trong bốn luận Trung Luận, Hồi Tránh Luận, Thập Nhị Môn Luận và Thất Thập Tính Không Luận hôm nay đã được dịch giảng đầy đủ ra Việt ngữ. Đây chính là nhân duyên cho sự phục hưng lại truyền thống tinh nhất của Phật pháp ở Việt Nam.

Thất Thập Không Tính Luận (Śūnyatāsaptatikārikā) mà chúng  ta có ngày nay chỉ còn trong các bản Tạng ngữ. Tuy nhiên vẫn còn nhiều giảng luận của các đại sư danh tiếng như Thanh Biện (Bhavya thế kỷ VI), Nguyệt Xứng (Candrakirti thế kỷ VIII) và Tịch Hộ (Śāntaraksita thế kỷ VIII) có trích dẫn tác phẩm này. Trước cả thời ngài Thanh Biện chúng ta cũng còn thấy nhiều sớ luận trích dẫn và nhắc đến Thất Thập Không Tính Luận, cho nên hầu như tất cả luận sư học giả từ xưa đến nay dù rất bảo thủ về nguyên tắc văn bản, đều đồng ý tác giả của Thất Thập Không Tính Luận là Long Thọ.
