Phật giáo đã tồn tại và gắn liền với dân tộc Việt Nam hơn 20 thế kỷ. Trải qua những thăng trầm cùng lịch sử đất nước, các Phật tử và thiền sư không ngừng đóng góp cho kho tàng văn hóa Việt Nam một số lượng tư liệu quy mô đồ sộ, trong đó chứa đựng những tinh hoa trí tuệ của cả một dân tộc.
Hiện nay chúng ta chỉ mới phát hiện một phần rất nhỏ số lượng tư liệu vừa mới bước đầu nghiên cứu và tìm hiểu một số tác giả và tác phẩm hiện đã biết tên, nhưng chưa được thực hiện một cách có hệ thống và nghiêm túc. Mà đối với kho tàng tri thức quý báu đó, chúng ta có trách nhiệm phải bảo tồn, khai thác và tận dụng một cách triệt để nhằm hổ trợ cho các thế hệ hiện tại và tương lai hiểu rõ thêm về nguốn gốc và truyền thống của văn hóa dân tộc, nhằm đóng góp và xây dựng cho xã hội hiện đại cho chúng ta ngày càng phát triển và văn minh hơn.
Vì vậy, để thể hiện nỗ lực và bảo tốn khai thác vừa nói, chúng tôi mạnh dạn cho công bố bộ Tổng tập Văn học Phật giáo Việt Nam này.
Bộ Tổng tập văn học Phật giáo Việt Nam của chúng tôi ra đời, do thế, sẽ được thực hiện theo một số phương châm sau. Thứ nhất, về mặt tổ chức, chúng tôi sắp xếp các tác phẩm văn học Phật giáo Việt Nam theo niên đại ra đời của các tác giả, tác phẩm từ khi Phật giáo truyền vào nước ta cho đến thế kỷ XX….
Thứ hai,về mặt học thuật, bộ Tổng tập này chỉ bao gồm các tác phẩm viết bằng văn tự khối vuông, tức bao gồm các tác phẩm viết bằng chữ Hán và chữ quốc âm.
Thứ ba,những tác phẩm in trong Tổng tập đều do các tác gia Việt Nam thực hiện, trừ ba dịch tác gia là Tỳ Ni Đa Lưu Chi, Viên Văn Chuyết Chuyết và Đại SánThạch Liêm. Tỳ Ni Đa Lưu Chi là người Ấn Độ, còn hai vị kia là người Trung Quốc. Tỳ Ni Đa Lưu Chi đã cùng với người học trò mình là Pháp Hiền thành lập nên dòng thiền Pháp Vân. Cho nên, vị thiền sư này qua những dịch phẩm của mình như Phật thuyết tượng đầu tinh xá kinh và Đại thừa phương quảng tổng trì kinh chắc chắn là có những ảnh hưởng lớn đến việc hình thành hệ tư tưởng thiền Pháp Vân. Vì vậy, cả hai dịch phẩm này sẽ được chúng tôi đưa vào phần phụ lục của Tổng tập. Viên Văn Chuyết Chuyết đã sống một thời gian dài và mất tại nước ta, có viết một tác phẩm ngắn là Bồ đề yếu nghĩa,chúng tôi cũng cho in vào đây để tiện việc nghiên cứu tác động tư tưởng của Viên Văn đối với lịch sử tư tưởng Việt Nam và Phật giáo Việt Nam. Còn Đại Sán Thạch Liêm có nhiều tác phẩm hơn và được lưu hành rộng rãi trong giới học thuật Phật giáo Việt Nam, đặc biệt là bộHải ngoại kỷ sự. Cho nên, để cung cấp tư liệu nghiên cứu, chúng tôi cũng cho công bố các tác phẩm của Đại Sán trong bộ Tổng tập này.
Thứ tư,về tác gia Đại Thừa Đăng, nếu giả thiết của chúng tôi về Đại Thừa Đăng là Đại Thừa Quang được chấp nhận, thì ta sẽ có một loạt các tác phẩm của thế kỷ thứ VII hiện biết dưới tên Đại Thừa Quang. Đó là Câu xá luận ký, Đại thừa bách pháp minh môn luận thuật ký và Duy thức chỉ nguyên. Các tác phẩm này có thể là do Đại Thừa Đăng viết, nhưng đã lưu hành dưới tên Đại Thừa Quang. Các tác phẩm này chúng tôi cũng sẽ đưa vào phần phụ lục của Tổng tập để làm tư liệu nghiên cứu, trong khi chờ đợi sự thẩm định của giới họcgiả trong và ngoài nước.
Thứ năm,đối với từng tác giả, chúng tôi cho nghiên cứu niên đại, cuộc đời và sự nghiệp của họ; còn đối với các tác phẩm, chúng tôi cho nghiên cứu tình trạng văn bản, nội dung và niên đại ra đời của chúng. Đồng thời cho phiên âm nếu viết bằng chữ quốc âm, dịch nghĩa nếu viết bằng chữ Hán, ra tiếng Việt quốc ngữ.
Thứ sáu,về mặt in ấn, ngoài việc cho in bản nghiên cứu, phiên âm hoặc dịch nghĩa từng tác phẩm như vừa nói, chúng tôi đồng thời cho in lại nguyên bản quố câm hoặc chữ Hán của chúng, nhằm bảo tồn các bản in quý, và để làm tư liệu kiểm soát cho những ai muốn tìm hiểu xa hơn. Những nguyên bản Hán và quốcâm bị thất lạc vào năm 1984, mà chúng tôi đã làm nghiên cứu và phiên âm hay dịch nghĩa, chúng tôi cũng mạnh dạn cho công bố trong bộ Tổng tập,trong khi chờ đợi tìm lại chúng và sẽ bổ sung trong tương lai, khi có dịp tái bản.
Dự kiến bộ Tổng tập văn học Phật giáo Việt Nam sẽ giới thiệu trên dưới 40 tác gia của Phật giáo Việt Nam, bắt đầu với Mâu Tử (160-220?) cho đến tác gia cuối cùng có tác phẩm viết bằng chữ Hán là thiền sư Chân Đạo Chính Thống (1900-1968). Trong số những tác gia này, họ chủ yếu là các thiền sư. Chỉ trừ ba tác gia đời Trần là Trần Thái Tông, Tuệ Trung Trần Quốc Tung và Trần Nhân Tông, một tác gia đời Lê là Lê Thánh Tông, một tác gia đời Tây Sơn là Ngô Thời Nhiệm và một tác gia thời Nguyễn là Nguyễn Du. Các tác gia này ngoài Phật giáo ra còn viết về nhiều đề tài khác nhau, song tự bản thân họ đã xác nhận mình là thiền sư như Trần Nhân Tông hay Ngô Thời Nhiệm, hoặc tự nhận mình có gắn bó chặt chẽ với Phật giáo qua thơ văn như Lê Thánh Tông và Nguyễn Du. Chúng tôi do thế đã đưa các tác gia này vào trong bộ Tổng tập văn học Phật giáo Việt Nam. Ngoài ra, một số tác gia khác có viết về đề tài liên quan đến Phật giáo Việt nam, và họ có thể là những Phật tử. Nhưng chúng tôi cũng chưa đưa vào trong bộ Tổng tập này, vì những tác phẩm ấy chưa chiếm ưu thế trong số lượng tác phẩm của họ. Chẳng hạn, Đặng Xuân Bản có viết Không Lộ đại thánh sự tích, song vẫn chưa đượcđưa vào trong Tổng tập này do việc nó không chiếm ưu thế trong toàn bộ tác phẩm của ông.
