… “A-tì-đạt-ma Pháp uẩn túc luận“, 12 quyển, Tôn giả Mục-kiền-liên tạo, Tam tạng pháp sư Huyền Trang phụng chiếu dịch”: đây là tiêu đề của một trong sáu túc luận, cũng là một trong bảy luận thư căn bản của Thuyết nhất thiết hữu bộ, được phiên dịch vào niên hiệu Hiển Khánh thứ 4 (Tl. 659), trước Tập dị môn luận một năm, sau khi hồi hương 14 năm.

Tiêu đề gốc Phạn của luận thư được phục hồi y theo dẫn thuật bởi Yaśomitra trong Kośavyākhyā (Câu-xá giải minh): Dharmaskandha, cùng lúc với sáu luận thư khác lập thành cơ sở Thánh điển của Hữu bộ. Mặc dù trong sáu luận thư, chỉ có Phẩm loại được gọi đủ với tiêu đề Phẩm loại túc luận (Prakaraṇa-pādaśāstra), các luận thư khác không như vậy, nhưng trong khi giới thiệu, Yaśomitra dẫn một“thân luận”là Phát trí và “sáu túc luận” (tasya śarīrabhūtasya śāṭ pādāḥ) . Bảy luận thư này, Thế Thân nói là một phần của thế tục A-tì-đạt-ma (saṃketika); nó là phương tiện, hay tùy hành, hỗ trợ chứng đắc tuệ vô lậu cùng với tùy hành của nó là năm uẩn vô lậu .

“Sáu túc luận”trước đã được La-thập đề cập trong luận Đại trí độ, gọi là “sáu phần A-tì-đàm”. Căn cứ theo đây, điều mà La-thập nói là phần thay vì túc, Ấn Thuận suy rằng từ “túc luận” (pādaśāstra) – luận chân, và “thân luận” (śarīraśāstra) – luận thân, chỉ được thêm vào các thời đại sau do bởi tầm quan trọng của các luận thư này trong sự phát triển của Hữu bộ. Suy luận này có thể hợp lý, nhưng các từ Hán dịch của La-thập ít khi trung thành với các quy tắc ngữ nguyên của Sanskrit, như saṃjñā (tưởng) có khi dịch là tướng, rất dễ nhầm lẫn với lakṣaṇa là hàm nghĩa yếu tính hay đặc điểm, hoặc nhầm với nimitta hàm nghĩa dấu hiệu, tín hiệu thông tin. Do đó không thể căn cứ từ Hán dịch ấy mà dịch ngược lại Sanskrit để biết rõ ý nghĩa chính xác là gì. Trong trường hợp này cũng vậy. Trong nguyên nghĩa Sanskrit, pāda có nghĩa là “chân”, là “gốc rễ”, mà cũng có nghĩa là “phần”, chính xác là “một phần tư” (Wogihara, Monier). Các học giả hiện đại đều hiểu như Huyền Trang mà Hán dịch sát nghĩa là “túc luận”.

Từ skandha (uẩn) trong dharmaskandha được Thế Thân giải thích đồng nghĩa với skandha trong pañcaskandha (năm uẩn). Từ này, cổ cựu dịch là 陰 ấm hay 眾 chúng. Trong đây, Hán dịch ấm được hiểu theo hai nghĩa: 蔭覆 ấm phú hay 陰蓋 ấm cái, che trùm, hay che đậy. Ma-ha chỉ quán giải thích:“(a) Nói là ấm, vì nó che trùm (ấm cái) thiện pháp. Đây là gọi tên theo nhân. (b) Ấm cũng có nghĩa tích tụ, sinh tử chồng chất. Đây là gọi tên theo quả.”Định nghĩa này một phần căn cứ theo Hán dịch của Chân Đế, và phần khác là căn theo nghĩa từ điển chữ Hán, không thấy trong Câu-xá.

Khuy Cơ giải thích ý nghĩa uẩn trong Pháp uyển nghĩa chương như sau:“Phạn nói là 塞建陀 tắc-kiến-đà (skandha), Đường (Trung Hoa) nói là uẩn. Cựu dịch là 陰 ấm (hoặc đọc là âm). Nếu đọc là ấm theo nghĩa 蔭覆 ấm phú (bóng che) thì tiếng Phạn nói là bát-la-bà-đa (?). Xét ra nên đọc là âm , tức từ trong âm dương.”

Trong định nghĩa của Câu-xá, skandha hay uẩn được giải thích như sau: ‘Tụ hòa hợp của các pháp hữu vi, đó là nghĩa của uẩn. Như Khế kinh nói: Những gì là sắc, hoặc quá khứ, hoặc vị lai, hoăc hiện tại, hoặc trong, hoặc ngoài, hoặc thô, hoặc vi tế, hoặc thấp kém, hoặc vi diệu, hoặc xa, hoặc gần, tất cả được họp lại làm một tụ, và gọi đó là sắc uẩn.’ Điều đó chứng minh rằng, theo như trong kinh đó, uẩn có nghĩa là tụ.”

Trong ý nghĩa vừa dẫn, pháp uẩn được hiểu là“Phật ngôn”(buddha-vacana). Thể tính của Phật ngôn được bao hàm trong hai uẩn: sắc (rūpa) hoặc hành (saṃskāra). Trước hết, Phật ngôn, những điều Phật nói, cần được phát ngôn và nghe qua ngữ âm (śabda), tức tiếng nói, thuộc sắc uẩn. Ngữ âm ấy bao gồm những âm tiết, họp thành một từ để chỉ sự vật, hay sự kiện. Hoặc bản thể của Phật ngôn là bộ phận danh (nāma-kāya: danh thân), thuộc hành không tương ưng tâm (citta-viprayukta-saṃskāra).
