Sau hơn nửa thế kỷ, những trước tác của Đỗ Long Vân (1934 – 1997) – một tài năng đặc biệt nhưng rất lặng lẽ – vừa được tái bản. Đầu tiên là cuốn Nguồn nước ẩn của Hồ Xuân Hương (NXB Đà Nẵng và Domino) vừa tái bản, tiếp đến sẽ là Vô Kỵ giữa chúng ta hay là hiện tượng Kim Dung (in lần đầu năm 1967). Đỗ Long Vân được đánh giá là tinh hoa của văn phê bình nghị luận ở miền Nam trước 1975.
Những văn bản của Đỗ Long Vân nằm ở giao điểm của phê bình văn học cấu trúc, suy tư triết học và lịch sử tư tưởng hiện đại. Mạch nguồn gần gũi nhất là những tên tuổi như Gyorgy Lukacs, Walter Benjamin thuộc dòng chủ nghĩa xã hội; Gaston Bachelard, Roland Barthes thuộc giới phê bình Pháp; Christopher Marlowe, T.S.Eliot, Jorge Luis Borges… trong các tác gia văn học.
Đỗ Long Vân rất tha thiết với tiếng Việt, anh đã hấp thụ cả truyền thống phương Đông qua chữ Nho và chữ Nhật, cũng như văn hóa phương Tây từ Hy Lạp, La Mã cổ đại cho đến Âu Mỹ đương thời để đưa vào văn bản tiếng Việt. Anh đã chứng tỏ khả năng kỳ diệu của tiếng Việt, nhuần nhuyễn và đa tầng trong việc giao lưu, tiếp thu thế giới để mở ra những chân trời mỹ học mới.
Anh đã rất ung dung, nhẹ nhàng với hành trang tri thức này, nên tiếp cận với các vấn đề của văn học Việt Nam theo một cung cách riêng. Cung cách đó là hoàn toàn độc lập, như người tự do và đầu tiên tiếp xúc với tác phẩm, không vướng mắc vào vòng tranh biện, cũng như bệnh tầm chương trích cú. Thực sự như một trẻ thơ, hoặc đúng hơn như một người không có tuổi và ngoài không gian đến với trái đất. Đó là cái độc đáo và cái mà sau hơn nửa thế kỷ, vẫn làm cho Đỗ Long Vân hoàn toàn mới đối với chúng ta.
Cung cách đó cũng khiến việc cống hiến của Đỗ Long Vân – trong giai đoạn 1954 – 1975 – trở thành tinh hoa của văn phê bình nghị luận ở miền Nam. Anh từ giã cõi đời, thi hài được gia đình đưa đi hỏa thiêu và an vị tại chùa Đại Giác năm 1997.
